Add “We Are All Self-Employed” to reading list?? (P)reviews welcome!

Everywhere I turn, I keep stumbling across the concept “We’re all self-employed now.”  Maybe this is the result of that phenomenon whereby once you buy, say, a Honda CRV or a Litespeed bike, you notice that everyone on the road seems to have one.   Or maybe not.

Greg sees CRVs and Litespeeds everywhereIn any case, I recently heard it used in the context of personal branding, at a Network for Work meeting where speaker Catherine Blake was describing how those seeking full-time jobs need to brand and market themselves just the way the self-employed do.  A Money magazine article with the central message ”Don’t wait for the company to push you. Start thinking like an entrepreneur now,” just came across my desk.  (Thanks, Rachel!)   I’ve even started using the phrase myself to describe what I see as the emerging model for successful personal financial planning.

Yes, the arrival of “free agent nation” has been forecast for quite some time now, but using this particular language to describe the personal transformation needed  to accommodate it feels like a relatively recent phenom.   So I was surprised to discover that Arlington, MA-based career consultant Cliff Hakim has already written books by precisely this name, one way back in 1995, plus a new one on a related topic.   All appear to be right up my alley.  So my question for you, blog readers:  Anyone read any of these books?  Any suggestions on which one(s) I should spend with my Amazon gift certificate on??  (Thanks, Dad!)
